Help Stop Cancer

Diabetes is a serious disease and the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. If you are a resident of Dallas County, you have a higher chance of having diabetes. Diabetes affects more than 11 percent of Dallas County residents, higher than the national average. One in ten Texans has diabetes while the national average is 9 percent.

According to the American Diabetes Association, someone is diagnosed with diabetes every 23 second. However, many people have Type 2 diabetes without knowing it. One in four Americans are unaware that they have diabetes.

Getting diagnosed is the first step toward living well with diabetes. If you have certain risk factors, it’s important to talk to your doctor about your history so you can get tested regularly and catch the disease before it gets worse. If you do have a higher chance of getting diabetes, take charge of your health: eat a balanced diet full of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, get regular exercise and manage your weight.

If you have Type 2 diabetes, you can stop this disease from getting worse. If you do not have diabetes, you can prevent it. That is why it is important for every person in your family to make good food choices and to be active.

If you would like to find out what your risk is for getting Type 2 diabetes, check out our risk assessment video that will walk you through what you need to know about your chance of getting the disease.
